A note from Jyoti
Pausing in a dysregulated world.
We seem to be mirroring the world right now, as we too are in a time of change and reformation.
Special Yoga has now been running for almost 25 years, and we are both internally and externally restructuring and evolving. And it feels more and more apparent that this work is deeply needed.
We are living in a world where dysregulation has become normalised. Anxiety is on the rise, mental health challenges are part of everyday conversation, and overwhelm has become a familiar state for so many people.
In a recent Zoom session, I could feel that anxiety present in the group. Rather than staying in the stories or trying to think our way through it, we paused.
We closed our eyes.
We followed the breath.
Simple.
Breathing in through the nose.
Breathing out through the mouth with a sigh.
As we breathe in, we can gently rest the tongue on the roof of the mouth and allow the breath to soften deep into the belly. And as we exhale, we relax the back of the tongue and sigh the breath out slowly through the mouth.
And we stay there for a few breaths.
Just noticing the sensation of breathing.
It’s actually amazing how quickly the body can begin to regulate itself.
The shoulders soften.
We come back into our bodies.
The nervous system settles.
The mind becomes quieter.
And slowly, we begin to feel safe enough to relax.
It is both simple and powerful. And often, it is less about learning something new and more about remembering what the body already knows.
And of course, the more we practise, the more these pathways become familiar.
That is the starting point of what we do at Special Yoga.
And this year, you have the opportunity to experience it with me in person in Bournemouth at our only UK in-person training of the year.
You are welcome to join us for the opening weekend or even a single day, or immerse yourself in the full week-long accredited training.
There is something incredibly nourishing about learning in person — slowing down together, breathing together, reconnecting to ourselves and each other in real time.
It truly is such a gift to give yourself.
Other opportunities to be in person with Jyoti this year will be Vienna, Austria in August and Montreal, Canada in October.
